Am Flughafen dann lief allen Befuerchtungen zum Trotz alles ueberraschend unkompliziert- hatte ja schon lange nichts mehr von meiner Ansprechpartnerin im Dubai-Buero gehoert, da sie in Urlaub war und ihre Vertretung hatte einen ziemlich schwer zu verstehenden, indischen Akkzent- als ich mal mit ihr telefoniert hatte, um herauszufinden, wie es dann nach meiner Ankunft am Flughafen weiterginge, war ich danach noch ratloser als zuvor- sie beharrte darauf, dass mich der Fahrer vom Flughafen erst in meine Unterkunft und dann gleich ins Buero bringt- meine Einwaende, dass es doch nachts um 23:30 Uhr sein wird, hat sie nicht weiter beachtet...
Jedenfalls: Zwar landete meine Maschine eine Stunde zu spaet, jedoch wartete Gulfran, der bueroeigene Chauffeur (natuerlich Inder (so wie der Grossteil der Gesamtbevoelkerung Dubais (sein Bruder ist uebrigens der bueroeigene Diener (wenn er nicht gerade rumgeschickt wird, Kopien anzufertigen (als ich einmal eine Kopie brauchte, meinte die Sekretaerin, sie koenne ihn ja anrufen, er solle das fuer mich erledigen- damit, dass ich es bevorzugte, im Nachbarzimmer (!) selbst schnell die Kopie zu machen, habe ich mir lediglich eine hochgezogene Augenbraue eingefangen) oder Supermarkteinkaeufe zu erledigen, geht er durch das Buero und versorgt alle mit Kaffee oder Wasser)))) geduldig mit einem Schild mit meinem Namen bei 35 Grad vor dem Flughafen auf mich, um mich in mein neues Zuhause zu bringen. Ohne mich anschliessend ins Buero zu bringen...
Ohje- ich sollte mit Fussnoten arbeiten...
Jedenfalls: Ich wusste nur, dass "eine Unterkunft gestellt wird" fuer meine ersten drei Monate Aufenthalt. Ob es sich dabei um eine grosse, vollklimatisierte Villa mit Swimmingpool oder um eine durchgelegene Matratze in einem muffigen Schlafsaal mit 17 indischen Bauarbeitern handelt, wusste ich dagegen nicht. Zum Glueck ist Ersteres der Fall. Die "Villa" hat drei Schlafzimmer, ein Riesenwohnzimmer, drei Badezimmer, eine grosse Kueche, Klimaanlage und einen Gemeinschaftsswimmingpool im Garten. Eines der Schlafzimmer steht z. Zt. leer und der Bewohner des anderen ist momentan im Urlaub. Was bedeutet, dass ich das ganze Haus noch bis naechste Woche fuer mich alleine habe :)
Wenn er denn dann mal zurueck ist, hoffe ich, dass er mir mitteilt, dass es hier im Haus bereits einen schnellen und guenstigen Internetanschluss gibt- den hab ich bis jetzt noch nicht gefunden. Was ich dagegen schon gefunden habe, sind Tiere verschiedener Gattungen und Groessen. Bevorzugt in meinem Schlafzimmer. Und damit man sich auch richtig schoen erschrecken kann, haben sie Farben, die sich gut von den weissen Fliesen abheben und sind ziemlich schnell. Ich bin jetzt schon gespannt, wer heute beim Grossen Krabbeln das Rennen machen wird, wenn ich nachher in meinem Schlafzimmer das Licht anmache. Meine Favoriten bis jetzt:
Auf Platz drei: Eine fuer ihre Groesse (3cm) ueberaus gelenkige und flinke Ameise (Jedoch nicht flink genug... moege sie in Frieden ruhen)
Auf Platz zwei: Ein krabbelndes, mir unbekanntes Insekt- aehnlich einer Kellerassel, nur groesser, flacher und gruener- ausserdem nicht so zaeh (auch sie moege in Frieden ruhen)
Auf Platz eins: Eine durchsichtig-orangene Gecko-Eidechse, nicht allzu gross, aber mit grossen Glubschaugen und der Faehigkeit, an Waenden und Decken zu krabbeln (von der sie zu meinem Unmut auch Gebrauch gemacht hat- sie muss noch irgendwo hinterm Schrank oder im Klimaanlagenschacht rumlungern und auf eine passende Gelegenheit warten, mich erneut das Fuerchten zu lehren)

After I landed at the airport, everything went surprisingly well. It already had been a while since I heard from the secretary of the Dubai office as she has been on holiday. I was supposed to talk to another girl from the office instead- unfortunately she has a very strong Indian accent what made it rather hard to communicate. I once called her to find out what is going to happen once I landed at the airport and she insisted that a driver will pick me up, bring me to my accommodation and will then bring me to the office straight away. I tried to point out that it will be almost midnight when I arrive, but she kept on telling me that he will bring me to the office straight away...
At any rate: Although the plane was delayed for one hour and it still has been 35 degrees, there was a very patient driver waiting for me in front of the airport. He took me to my new home- surprisingly without taking me to the office after that...
Gulfran, the driver, is Indian- as most of the Dubai population. His brother is working in the office as well- doing photocopies (when I first wanted to do a copy, the secretary offered to call him so he can do the copy for me- I preferred to do the copy by myself as the copy machine was in the very next room...), doing the shopping and serving coffee, tea and water to the staff- very handy :)
At this stage I just knew that they would "provide accommodation" for the first three months. I didn't know whether it would be a big, air-conditioned villa with swimming pool or a smelly mattress in a sticky dormitory sharing with 17 Indian construction workers. Lucky me it is not the dormitory. I'm now staying at the "company villa"- a big three bedroom house, huge living room, big kitchen, three bath rooms and a communal swimming pool in the back garden! One of the three bedrooms is not in use at the moment and as my other flat mate (villa mate that is!) is on annual leave right now, I have the entire building for myself for the next couple of days :)
Once he'll be back I hope he will tell me that there already is a fast wireless broadband internet connection in our house, which I just couldn't find up to now. What I did find is a lot of creepy animals though and for some reason they prefer staying in my bedroom. I'm already scared what will show up this night when I switch on the lights in my bedroom... Up to now my top three animals are:
#3: A 3cm long and (regarding its size) very fast ant (not fast enough though- Rest in peace)
#2: A crawling insect which I haven't seen before ever- about 2cm long, roundish, flat, green, and a lot of legs (but not very sturdy- Rest in peace)
#1: A transparent-orange lizard, not very big, but with huge black eyes and the ability to climb up walls and ceilings (unfortunately it was using this ability and it probably is sitting behind the wardrobe or somewhere inside the air conditioner just waiting for another opportunity to scare me...)
During the day I’m working and in the evenings I mainly stay in, so I can’t tell you much about Dubai at this stage. My new impressions about this new city and about my work will follow soon!
